Nicely Done Die Cast, For The PriceApr 21, 2012
By Ian C. Anderson
This replica of the 1970 Ferrari 512S endurance racing sports car looks great sitting side-by-side in my display case with AutoArt's 1970 Porsche 917K. These entries from Ferrari and Porsche competed against each other at the world's great endurance races, such as Spa, Monza, Sebring, Daytona and Le Mans. I've long awaited a 512S in 1:18 die-cast, and now Mattel (Hot Wheels) has produced one.
Overall the model is fairly well detailed for the (relatively) low price point it is offered at. Front and rear body work is removable to reveal some detailed engine, chassis and suspension components. Certainly the materials and level of detail don't compare with higher-priced die-cast products from brands like Exoto, but again for the price the finish and detail didn't disappoint me. The only critical comment I might have on the 512S is that the ride height seems a bit too high for the scale, particularly at the rear. Otherwise the paint finish, marking details and headlights look quite nice. The racing harness on the driver's seat also looks quite good. For the price, this is a nice-looking die-cast replica of a significant marque in racing history. Hopefully at some point Mattel will also produce the "Coda Longa" (long-tail Le Mans) version of this car.
Nice for priceJul 06, 2012
I got this because I'm a Ferrari owner, have an extensive collection of Ferrari models and have a signed painting of this car at Sebring.
Quality is good overall, for a up-scale made in China item. Good detail but not to the level of GMP models.
The Amazon review lists this as a toy which it is not so disregard the stars. Overall it's a good value for the price paid,
